TransLinc ensures Local Authorities are prepared for changes to HGV legislation

The UK’s leading local authority fleet service provider, TransLinc is taking steps to ensure all of its customers are ready to comply with the changes in EU Legislation due in March 2009 on the retrofitting of enhanced specification mirrors to vehicles over 3.5tonnes.

The new visibility guidelines, introduced to enhance the drivers near side field of view and protect vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists are particularly relevant for a large proportion of the vehicles supplied by TransLinc that operate in urban areas. The vehicles affected includes Refuse Collection Vehicles, gritters, large road sweepers and tippers which will all be retro-fitted with Class IV (wide angle) and Class V (close proximity) mirrors that the EU predict could save up to 400 lives each year.

Dave Parsons, National Operations Manager for TransLinc said, “It is TransLinc’s responsibility to ensure all vehicles we supply on contract hire are fitted with the new mirrors. Some of our customers will choose to do this independently and we have implemented a fitment programme to update all vehicles to meet the necessary legislation.”
“As the majority of vehicles supplied by TransLinc operate in urban areas, we strongly support any measures to improve pedestrian and road safety within the 45 local authorities in which we operate.”

With a national infrastructure to cover vehicle repair and replacement, TransLinc is well positioned to advise and assist other organisations in ensuring all vehicles have the necessary mirrors fitted, before the March deadline.
